Online or Print?

One of my favorite magazines is Powder (http://www.powder.com/ ) and I have been enjoying perusing through its pages by the warm fire on my couch each winter for many years now.  I find the pictures inspiring and the articles informative and both are enlightening to the world of skiing but, more importantly(at least to me) the search for that elusive, light, white, and deep powder that keeps so many of us skiers in anticipation each ski season.

But, I must say, now that I have transformed my access to the online world with a reliable home wireless system and an Apple iPad, I may find myself ditching my printed Powder Mag for their online site since I can now cuddle up on the couch with the Internet in my hands.  Here, with my iPad, I can still surf through all those great pictures and articles but I also will be able to be indulged with captivating and almost surreal videos and live TV (SALOMON FREESKI TV) along with all the great photos and articles.

I think the even more alluring aspect of this new form of journalism is the fact that while doing it online, we become part of a community that enjoys the same topics and great journalism through our ability to share what we just watched, admired, or read with others on our social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and our own blogs, like this.  So, it will be interesting to see this winter if my issues of Powder begin to start collecting dust in our magazine basket down by the side of the couch or will I find myself longing for that paper copy in my hand that I can flip through page by page while sipping on a beverage.  One obvious benefit of the old fashioned magazine is that it is not so serious if you spill your drink after becoming too excited from what you are reading or watching.

Enjoy these videos from powder.com about a Skiers Journey.  Watching them made me want to read all about these amazing locations.  Another reason to read Powder online .... might end up reading more!

  1. My students loved these videos. They watched parts of them today to get ideas for film editing. These videos really use a lot of good effects and provide many unique perspectives to the eye!

  3. The Ipad is a great way to work or finish up homework, while spending time with the family. An Ipad is great for being on the internet and being with your family.

  7. This is Dylan, I thought this article was very inspiring. I would love to have an Ipad, so I don't have to leave my room to search for my favorite videos. I want to be able to listen to music while I do my hoework and play games all at the same time on my bed instead of a desk.

  8. I agree, I think it'd be easier and cheaper if you were to read books from offline instead of going out and buying the books. I think its really interesting that you can do that, and that the technology has increased over the years so you are now able to do that.

  9. I find it interesting that the way reading or pretty much the outcome of how far the intenet has come, I think that a print source for reading would be better (for me) since i dont have a ipad or a netbook, other than that i like the ipad and netbook because it give all the wonders of reading and you can multi task

  10. Powder Mag is the only thing I read. I love it, and also find it inspiring myself. Being that im not the kind of person that likes reading,I happen to love powder, and always have. Powder Mag shares articles with you that are sad, funny, and amazing, but at the same time it also shares the good and bad times. I love magazines and will continue to read them till the day I die. 12. I prefer to use the printed version of magazines. It is easier to take with me. I can just rollit up and put it anywhere. I don't have to worry about breaking it or a dead battery on my IPad or laptop. I also find that the glare is hard on my eyes. I can't stare at a computer screen for too long without my eyes freaking out on me. The printed versions make it easier and less stressful no matter where I am.

  13. I thought the post showed the often unrecognized light in technology. The ipad is pretty awesome. Before I always thoguht it was really silly and just a giant ipod with a lil extra, but now learning more about it and seeing it around more it is really a huge step in technology. The graphics on the screen are so clear and precise, and seems so quick and just super cool. They are expensive at first, but pay off themselves in the end. Being able to sit by the fire with the fam and still being together but still be connected to the outer world. I prefer paper over the internet though because sometimes I get too tired looking at a computer screen for too long.

  17. Reading books or magazines online is nice because it saves trees and does not collect dust. However, holding a book or magazine has a certain feeling. It allows you to underline lines that you like and dog-ear the pages you want to remember. Yes, I understand that you can mark a page under favorites, but being able to hold something and feel the slick pages between your fingers is a privalage. Personally, I enjoy being able to have something i can read and curl up with.

I think its better to get a magazine for a couple dollars instead of buying a ipad for hundreds of dollars

  20. There are many benefits to both online reading an reading the magazine. Personally, I prefer the online reading and save reading magazines for times when I am on a plane or on the road. At home, the convenience and extra features on the online versions of magazines are just too much to pass up

I agree that reading them online is more convinient. First off, it's easier to get a hand of, sometimes you look for something, and you can't find it (Market Wise). And all you have to do, is just type the name of the magazine, or the subscription place. And being able to take it anywhere, because of wireless, makes it all the more fun, because when I read, I like to listen to music as well. And I'm too lazy to reach my iPod, so I just go on youtube, and listen to music from there, while reading something.

  22. I like the internet better because then you don't have the magazines to deal with after you have read them. The internet gives you access to anything you want, but you have to find specific magazines in order to find what you want. -Savannah M

  24. Although the iPads and other wireless internet devices are so easy to use, I would definatley have to stick with a printed version of a book or magazine. It just has a different feel, turning the pages and sensing the familiar smell of an old book. -Kelty W

  26. I think that it's a great idea to just go onthe internet and search what you would like to watch or read about. The new technology that is swarming all over the world has been a big impact on society. You don't have to wait for the magazines to come in the mail you can just search the website for the new articles and videos on that topic. Chris R

  28. I thought this article was very well written and informative of what is going in the modern ways of the world. Many people would agree that technology is overtaking the way we as people live and this is one example of it. The internet can be a great source for videos and more captivating image than magazines can, but books are also a great way of captivating the mind and expressing your imagination. So, overall I really like this article.

  34. In my opinion reading a magazine is better. With magazines, you can highlight, cut out things, dog-ear pages, and anything else you would like to do with it..(like kill bugs haha). And what would happen if the battery died on your iPad?? Right. You would have to read a magazine! So i think it is better to have both reading materials handy, the iPad and a magazine.

But you cant use it everywere like you would with a magazine because if someting falls on the magazine you wouldnt mind as much, but on the ipad you hav to be caruful were it is and whut your doing while using it.

  37. I think that the internet has realy changed the way we read things and we can read more things and not wait for a subscription to come in the mail and go strait to the web site. on the other hand its good to get away from electronics and pick up an old fasion magazine and read it.

I like to ski to :)

  43. I really find it amazing that now people are able to read, comment, or even wath videos on ipad. Internet has really come a long way. I love the fact that when I am using an ipad I can comment on what I have just read and also share with friends the article. Even if ipad has brought more possibilites to the reader, I still really enjoy holding a magazine by my fire place.

  44. Thanks everyone for sharing your thoughts. Most commenters prefer to read online to save paper and due to the extra bells and whistles that the web versions tend to offer like video and audio. There was one reader who mentioned that she would miss the smell and feel of the printed book -- a common response I have heard from typically older readers. It would be interesting to see what the actual environmental savings are now that more and more people are reading material online versus on paper. I am concerned that we may not actually be helping much since trees are a renewable resource if managed properly and now due to technology we consume lots of energy to run our computers/devices and have the terrible problem with E-waste.

  45. I would rather do online beacuse I think that it could be saving our planet. If we do online then we dont have to waste paper if no one buys them. Also if you would like to see videos you would have to go online anyways. When you choose online instead of print you can go on the internet almost whenever you want.Another reason why online is better is because you dont have to pay for a new magazine everytime one comes out, you can just go online and be updated almost everyday

I think that online is better then print because on line you can access to see whatever you want..and printe, if you dont take care of your print documens you will lose it and you will no be able too keep acces to thos documents. so online is better.
